Nice article Sean. Don't let Tanner steal the Oilers logo again. You at least provide an informed opinion on the club.

Nurse is still a huge mess defensively. Probably should deal him before he hits his prime years and still cant handle his coverage in front of the net.

Nurse is brutal. Probably time to start listening to your crazy uncle Jimmy. That guy sounds smart and he'd never use the phrase "because reasons."

Haha honestly Tippett is probably the worst choice possible. And that's the funniest all time thing to ever appear on hockeybuzz, I'm not even insulted.

Dmen with comparable 5 on 5 offense to Nurse over the last two years include the following names:

#8 Dougie Hamilton w/ 53 (23G, 30A)
#9 Tyson Barrie w/ 53 (16G, 37A)
#10 Jake Gardiner w/ 52 (7G, 45A)
#11 Darnell Nurse w/ 51 (13G, 38A)
#12 Seth Jones w/ 51 (13G, 38A)
#13 Victor Hedman w/ 51 (22G, 29A)
#14 Duncan Keith w/ 50 (5G, 45A)
#15 Alex Pietrangelo w/ 50 (14G, 36A)
#16 Jake Muzzin w/ 50 (12G, 38A)
#17 Thomas Chabot w/ 50 (19G, 31A)

And the list doesn't get much less impressive if I were to continue for another 10 names (guys like Letang, Spurgeon, McDonagh, Provorov, Werenski, etc fall below that cohort). Worth noting that he's also #3 in 5 on 5 TOI over that span with 3105 minutes while many of these others are closer to 2600 to 2900. His scoring rates are going to be lower as such, but I don't know that I'd hold playing the 3rd most minutes in the league against him.

His coverage issues are certainly a concern, but nothing worth sending him away for. Having Russell for a partner likely doesn't help in maintaining coverage. Given Nurse has yet to hit 300 NHL games and is freshly 24, we can be confident his defense will still improve.

Additional great points. Would love to see Nurse play a season with a reliable top 4 defender. His most regular partners last season were Russell and Larsson who had arguably his worst season in the NHL.

Don't think it's even arguable. Quite clearly his worst season by a wide margin. Running a 963 PDO, -12% below xGF and result numbers down over 10% from career avg makes it seem like just a blip on the radar, but it's hard to tell with Dmen.

As for a Nurse partner, I'm prepping a list of targets and there seems like there could be an inordinate number of quality candidates available this offseason (based off rumors, of course).

Nurse can defend I seen it today vs Kakko but he does need to be a bit more consistent on that front....as was pointed out perhaps pairing him with someone else besides the black hole known as Russell would more then likely help his game as well.....the one thing I do know for sure is I’m not trading him if I’m Holland

If the Oil could get Colin Miller that would be a pretty solid pair ....

Tanner lol...secretly a flame fan. Him and cordell are the worst on here by a mile. Let holland and tippett have their chance, all things point to increased wins, points and playoffs judging by their records. Esp when you consider the time tippett spent with that joke of a franchise coyotes, where did cap space was the norm.

James Tanner is not only a poor judge of pretty much anything hockey, but as he continually slips in his personal, non-hockey remarks and views, we all start to realize that he actually is not doing the "life" thing right either. Tanner's future is not looking so bright, he knows it, so he's one of those people trying to bring down others.

No one should take him seriously at all, and I don't think it reflects well on HB to keep him around just for the "hits" to his blogs.

Dear Sean. Nurse sucks. Holland sucks. Tippett is the worst coach. Galchenyuk is better than Domi. Schmaltz could be a 90+ point guy who is signed to a great contract. By a genius GM. Who wasn't recycled trash like Trotz. Lou is the worst GM ever. Caps won a Cup through pure luck. - James Tanner

Nice blog SM....I like how you ended how this teams position will ultimately improve with better players being moved in. I can't agree more....as per my response to James Assner's blog yesterday...speaking of which I see he took the time chime in again...remember my suggestion to you yesterday about changing your name JT...I'll suggest you change your first name as well after reading your comments today...try Jack to with the new last name I gave you...

No. You see, the point of getting Nurse a partner is to get someone capable of defending well. Miller is of no interest to me. He plays pretty sheltered minutes and does little with said minutes but get murdered in HD conversions. His cap hit is around twice as high as it ought to be, in my opinion.

Anywho: great blog, Sean. Nurse is a solid top four. Think he’ll be that perfect second pairing, PP quarterback for years.

I find it strange that lots of Oilers fans out there want to trade him....my personal favourite reason for a Nurse trade is to “just get rid of him before he gets paid the big bucks”

You're correct on starts 65% to 35 Ozone ... However his CF% and Fenwick are both real good. Now I'm not sure if that's a reflection of the line he's out with and against or more Gallant's system. Him being relatively young and all thought he might make a good match with Nurse.

Too lazy to look up the stats, but Nurse was often the d-man watching McDrai win games in OT. So that does inflate some stats. Including plus/minus which is super important to dinosaurs like Holland.
